The Female ConditionPortraitsNature Plants and ThingsPaintings
My paintings focus on the female form’s ability express emotion through posture. I try to find ways to obscure the face, so that the characters can be viewed as “any woman” and can easily represent a symbol of a certain feeling. While almost everyone finds the female form to be beautiful, it can also be viewed as a burden. In this way, creating the figures as faceless serves another purpose. Juxtaposed with a view of breasts, or other tantalizing areas of the body, it accentuates what many woman fear every day: the feeling that they can be somehow reduced to just a body. My liberation of these women from their preconceived identities is through the treatment of their hands, a stark contrast to the rest of the form, and an indication of hard work and struggle.
